It was the sinking of the first mine in 1905 and 1906 that put Sesser on the map.  With community spirit, always boosting their town, the second mine sunk in 1916 cause the population of the village to almost double! The First National Bank of Sesser, which opened September 5, 1906, has been able to keep pace rapid growth and development over the years.  It still stands in town today but has been converted into the Bank of Sesser Lounge. Another hot spot in town is the historical Opera House Theater. It was originally built in 1904 and after being destroyed in a fire, was rebuilt in 1914. The Opera House has been restores and is now used by the community theater and musical programs.

Sesser is still expanding and building today as they recently acquired a 23 acre park featuring four new baseball diamonds, built and paid for by the St. Louis Cardinal’s Rebird Rookie Program. Beyond sports the Sesser community offers many parks and recreational activities.  Just 5 minutes north on 154, Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation area offers waters ports, horseback riding, welcomes wildlife observers and more.  The Ten Mile Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area is excellent for fishing and Giant City State Park is perfect for the hikers. Rend Lake Days, Oktoberfest and Sesser Homecoming are all events that the community shares each year with craft and food vendors and more. To discover more about Sesser, click here
