Next time you put Kraft Miracle Whip on your sandwich, think of Salem Illinois! Legend has it, this small town is where the creation of Miracle Whip was discovered at Max Crossett’s Café. The story proclaims Kraft bought the recipe known at the time as “Max’s X-tra fine salad dressing” in 1931 for only $300 and has since renamed it to Kraft’s Miracle Whip. Another legend surrounds the Half-Way Tavern, located on U.S. 50 just east of Salem. The tavern, built in 1815, got it name because it is halfway between St. Louis, Missouri and Vincennes, Indiana. The story tells that in the early 1800’s a stagecoach carrying gold was held up by Indians and they made off with it. When a posse closed in on them, they supposedly buried it in a wooded area just north of the tavern. To this day, farmers have plowed up many Indian arrowheads, but no one has admitted to finding the buried treasure.
Expanding on its early history of William Jennings Bryan and the G.I. Bill of Rights, this small town continues the same aggressive spirit of the past supporting architectural and historic preservation, and beautification projects. Recently the Salem Education Center opened, allowing students to complete an Associates of Arts and some Applied Science degrees. Salem has many community events such as a Car Cruise, Antique Power Days, Bluegrass, Applefest and Little Egypt Festival. To learn more about Salem, click here.
