The city of Olney was founded in 1841 and serves as the seat to Richland County in Southern Illinois.  In the early 1900’s, Olney became well known for its population of white squirrels and is often referred to the “White Squirrel Capital of the World".  The Olney City Council has amended ordinances disallowing cats and dogs from running at large in hopes to protect the white squirrel population. The best time for visitors to take a peek at these furry albino creatures is in the morning at one of the local parks, Olney City Park or Millers Grove. The Richland Heritage House Museum is a late 1800’s home that has been renovated and restored to its original condition to give a glimpse of what life was like over 100 years ago. Richland County is also home to two wineries; Fox Creek Vineyards and Berryville Wineries which both offer a variety of homegrown selections of wines. East Fork, Vernor and Borah lakes all provide boating, swimming and outdoor fun activities. To learn more about the Olney community, click here.
