Mt. Carmel was founded in 1815 and sits at the confluence of the Wabash and Patoka Rivers in Wabash County. Much of the original beauty can still be viewed down the brick streets of Cherry Street where stately homes of the 1800’s and early 1900’s are still standing.
The small town atmosphere provides a laid back atmosphere to the students at Wabash Valley College, part of the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges. Mt. Carmel received a bit of fame when it was featured on Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for its once multi-colored bridge over the Wabash River. The bridge is now green, but still connects Mt. Carmel with Princeton, Indiana. The Wabash River provides opportunities for boating, fishing and more. The Wabash County Museum offers insight to the history and memorabilia of the town. Each year the town is spiced up a little with the Wabash Ribber Fest where you can compete in the National Barbeque contest. The Beall Woods State Park offers acres of woodland, hiking trails and more. To learn more about Mt. Carmel, click here.
