Litchfield’s legacy started indeed when the railroad reached its town in the fall of 1854. The community saw rapid growth and improvement which continued for many years following. It was the first in the state to respond to the Civil War, forming the Seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the first in the State of Illinois. The discovery of oil, gas, and coal and the building of U.S. Route 66, the main highway from Chicago to Los Angeles also contributed to its growth.
The Hall of Fame sites located along Route 66 offer 3 miles of original “Mother Road” highway. Several original businesses that date back to 1924, such as the Ariston Café, can be found along this route. For a mere $2 you can see newly released movies under the stars at the Sky-View Drive-In, which recently celebrated its 60th Anniversary in 2010. Lake Lou Yaeger offers 1200+ of boating, swimming, skiing and more. The Shoal Creek Conservation Area is a nature lover’s paradise, providing trails on 266 acres of woodlands, prairie barrens, ridges and cliffs. The City of Litchfield can meet the needs of any visitor. To learn more about upcoming events, recreation, shopping, etc. click here.
