Did you know Herrin is hometown to country music star David Lee Murphy, baseball’s Cleveland shortstop Ray Chapman, as well as Medal of Honor recipient Joseph William Ozbourn?  This town in southern Illinois was established on April 17, 1900 as Lusk’s Ferry Road, connecting Fort Kaskaskia and the Ohio River, was being developed. Herrin was a thriving coal mining community into the early 20th century, but has since declined and is now more industry based.

The location of Herrin is often referred to as “God’s Country” because of the rolling hills, untouched forests and wandering lakes.  Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge offers hunters a paradise of deer, quail, rabbit, dove, turkey and more. Sightseeing, hiking, and picnicking are also prominent parts of life in the area.  The Herrinfesta Italiana, held over Memorial Day weekend, draws over 60,000 people to the community spotlighting its rich Italian heritage. Festivities include activities like Bocce ball tournaments, pasta eating contests, a carnival and much more! To learn more about the Herrin community, click here.
