The village of Gillespie saw its beginning over 125 years ago when the Gillespie mine started production. As railroads expanded across the state, more coal to fuel these operations was needed and the mine was in need of miners to bring this coal to the surface. The town began to boom in the late 1800’s and well into the early 1900’s. On January 1905, Gillespie’s business district was completely wiped out by a destructive fire. However, the citizens bounced back and began to rebuild Main Street with brick buildings that you can still see today.
Gillespie is still a thriving small town that is still influenced by the coal mining industry. It is home to the Annual Black Diamond Days, a celebration of coal miners and coal mining. The Canna Theatre has only one cinema, with admission of $5 including popcorn and a drink! Just north, on the outskirts of the town, Lake Gillespie provides opportunities to fish, boat, water-ski and much more. To learn more about Gillespie, click here.
