What do Matt Mitrione, mixed martial artist who competes in UFC, Ada Kepley, the first American woman to graduate from law school, and Jimmy Kite, a driver with IndyCar and NASCAR all have in common? They were all residents of Effingham Illinois.
Effingham, known as Broughton in the early 1800’s, first saw settlers as they were making their way west on the Old Cumberland Trail and has continued to grow at a moderate pace. The town is now referred to the “Crossroads of America” because of its location at the intersection of two major Interstate highways: I-57 which links Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico and I-70 which connects the east and west coasts. To symbolize the crossroads, a 198 foot Cross was constructed to serve as a beacon of hope to the 50,000 plus travelers each day. Because of Effingham’s location, it has a broad range of restaurants, lodging and attractions. The Effingham Performance Center hosts 50 performances a year by several nationally recognized performers. MY Garage Corvette Museum, owned by MidAmerica Motorworks houses vintage Corvettes, history and memorabilia. Lake Sara provides opportunities for skiing, picnicking and walks in the woods. Effingham can also be found in pop culture. Radio comedians Bob and Tom produced a segment on their national radio show poking fun at the “Effing” segment of the name, Jason Koo’s book, Man on Extremely Small Island, has as its first poem “Swearing by Effingham” and Ben Folds’s album Way to Normal includes a track that was inspired while driving by Effingham referring to the city as “Effington”.
