It was the traffic of the Illinois Central railroad that put this town on the map in 1851.  Located in Marion, Washington, Clinton and Jefferson Counties in Illinois, its name stems from being the point where the two original branches of the railroad converged.

The thriving town you see today once had a grim looking future. On March 25, 1947, the Centralia No. 5 coal mine explosion took the lives of 111 miners. Deep scars resulted from the disaster as many left behind widows and dependent children.  The oil boom dried up in the 1950’s, leaving surrounding countryside with shut down factories and the manufacturing industry that sprung up in the 70’s, also collapsed as business moved across seas.   Today, Centralia is home to Kaskaskia College which offers Associates of Science and Arts degrees for transfer to four year colleges and universities.  Foundation Park provides 235 acres of scenic hiking trails, an ice skating pond, fishing and more! It is also the site of the annual Balloon Fest, the town’s hot air balloon festival.  For more information on Centralia and what is has to offer today, please click here.
