Between 1809 and 1814, settlers were first attracted to Carmi because of its location on the East bank of the Little Wabash River in Southern Illinois. Once home to Col. Everton Conger, the man who captured John Wilkes Booth after his assassination of President Lincoln, this little town went from humble beginnings to a town of over 5,000.

Agriculture plays a very large part in the Carmi community.  Most employment is based around farming and other agricultural related work such as fertilizer companies, grain elevators, implement dealers, etc.  Each year on the second weekend of October to elaborate on farming’s importance within the city, Carmi Corn Days, a festival full of entertainment, food and fun is held. It is also the seat for the White County Fair that brings rides, games, harness racing and much more to life. Coal, oil and gas have also contributed to the White County economy.  White County Coal, LLC, a leading underground producer in the Illinois Coal Basin, began in 1983 and produces 2.3 million tons annually.  While initial oil drilling in the county was unsuccessful, over the past 60 years, it has produced approximately 245,000,000 barrels of oil.
