Home of the largest man-made lake, Carlyle Lake, was founded in 1818 by Charles W. Slade who named it after his grandmother’s family.  It serves as the county seat of Clinton County and located 50 miles east of St. Louis.

Did you know the fist Carlyle business was a ferry to carry traffic across the Kaskaskia River? The General Dean Suspension Bridge, built in 1859 at a cost of $40,000, was used for nearly 70 years to cross the river. In 1951 the State Legislature appropriated $20,000 to restore the bridge and as of 1976 this was the only suspension bridge in Illinois. If a 1918 mousetrap, egg crate maker, or a 1938 Boat Bell spark your interest, all can be found at the Clinton County Historical Museum.  Originally built in the 1860’s as Sidney Breese’s private residence, this museum now houses many artifacts from the area, genealogical material, as well as many books and periodicals on the history of the county. Although Carlyle Lake was built for flood control, it is widely used for outdoor recreation. The 11,000 acres of public land surrounding the lake provides excellent opportunities for hunting, camping, entertainment and more.  The Bretz Wildlife Lodge and Winery calls Carlyle its home.  Centrally located among 13 Southwestern Illinois wineries, it is a perfect place to stay if you are going to plan a trip to visit.  Click here to learn more about Carlyle.
