The original inhabitants of this small city in Macoupin County, located at the intersection of Illinois Route 159 and the Bunker Hill Blacktop, consisted of members of the Peoria, Kickapoo, and Winnebago Indian tribes.  Initially this town was known as Wolf Ridge, due to the presence of wolves in the vicinity.  As early pioneers arrived, Bunker Hill was settled in 1830.

On March 19, 1948, a tornado that originated in Alton, IL, screamed through Bunker Hill, destroying the majority of the town and killing 19 people.  Even though this tornado was only in the town for less than a minute, the destruction was devastating.  The estimated property damage was $4-$5 million and this included all 5 churches destroyed by the twister.  Today, the Bunker Hill Historical Museum, located in the old town hall on Warren Street, features exhibits on the 1948 tornado as well as local history information, the Bunker Hill Military Academy and the early 20th century doctor’s office.  Bang! Bang! Bang!  Just north of town is Brittany Shooting Park. It serves as host to several Illinois State trap meets as well as offers daily shooting.  To honor those who fought and died for our freedom, the Bunker Hill Cemetery is home to the Soldiers Monument.
