What do Doug Collins, NBA Coach, player, broadcaster and Olympic basketball player, Bill Grammer, Grand Ole Opry Star, Lin Bolen, former Vice President of NBC, and Tommy Johnagin, stand-up comedian, all have in common? They have all been residents of Benton, Illinois! As the county seat of Franklin County, this small village organized in 1841 started out as 20 acres of property donated by John Ewing and Walter S. Akin.
On April 19, 1928, Benton was the site of the last public hanging in Illinois when local gangster Charles Birger was executed for the murder of Joe Adams, mayor of nearby West City. A replica of the gallows and hangman’s noose were reconstructed and placed next to the old jail which is now a Historical Jail Museum. This museum gives in-site to the gangster era during prohibition in the Benton community. If you’re interested in cars, the Franklin County Garage located on Main Street is a former Ford dealership that has been restored to its original condition. This garage features autos and memorabilia of the era. Rend Lake, the second largest man-made lake in Illinois, offers an invigorating font of activity from picnicking, biking, hunting, golfing, boating and much more!
