First organized as a town in 1871, Altamont is located in Effingham County, midway between St. Louis, Missouri and Terre Haute, Indiana on Interstate 70 and US Route 40.  Although it is primarily an agricultural community, there is vast manufacturing employment throughout the county.

Altamont is a community that strives to provide a range of activities for all ages.  As seat of the Effingham County Fairgrounds, it offers summer entertainment of rodeos, concerts, pageants, fair food and more!  Right down North Main Street in the center of town is Wright’s Mansion, constructed in 1889 by Charles M. Wright I. After 3 generations of Wrights, this mansion was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in May of 1986. Originally constructed as a church in 1912, the Altamont Living Museum now offers a wide variety of performances from local actors.  Still containing its original beauty of stained glass windows, period wood floors and light fixtures, as well as wooden pews for seating this museum fully funded by donations and fundraisers provides award winning performers, country/bluegrass variety shows and much more!  Union Cemetery is the home of the Veterans Memorial containing 748 names of ladies and gentlemen from the Altamont and St. Elmo area that fought for our country.
